About us
The Department of Geology started its journey in the year 1972, under the stewardship of Professor Gauri Shankar Ghatak. The main initiative was taken by Professor Pratip Kumar Mukherjee, the founder principal of Durgapur Government College, who was an eminent scholar in the field of Earth Science.
Despite several problems, the performance of the students of the Department in the university examinations and in the National Level Entrance Examinations for the post graduate studies in IITs, ISM, and other national institutions established this department as one of the leading undergraduate teaching department in Eastern India.
In the year 1983, Burdwan University, the then affiliating university of this college, upgraded this department to the status of post graduate department of Geology of the University, on the basis of a successful teaching performance over a decade and thus Durgapur Government College got the status of Constituent College of Burdwan University.
The Earth Scientists produced by this department have made the department proud by their excellent performance in different fields. They have gradually established themselves as eminent professionals or academicians in different organizations and institutions in the country and abroad.
With furthur recognition of the research and teaching performances, the department came under the FIST Programme of the Department of Science and Technology ,Government of India,in 2004.
Also a Student Organization Association for the Cultural of Earth Science (ACES), was founded on 8th February 1989. Its main purpose is to encourage the juvenile minds of upcoming geologists to explore the varoius aspects of Earth Sciences beyound the formal frameworkof University curriculum.
GEOLOZINE, the jounal of ACES is published every alternate years and provides the budding geologists of this department with a platform for expressing their ideas.
The department is committed to render the best possible education to its students. Apart from these, the Department of Geology is best known for its cultural ethics and unity among the members.
Presently the college is now affiliated under Kazi Nazrul University,Asansol.
There is a separate Alumni Association of the Geology Department which organizes a biennial alumni meet where ex-students and current students exchange views about academic issues and employment opportunities. The alumni meet began its jouner since 2004. This year the Department of Geology,Durgapur Government college ,is going to host its 8th Reunion (ACCRETION 2018) .
